The Big Question: Spiral or Straight Needles for my Porvair Evaporator?

The Porvair Sciences evaporators have been specifically designed to for use prior to analysis or reconstitution in storage buffer in order to remove the traditional laboratory ‘bottleneck’ of solvent evaporation from microplates.

What are the advantages of the Porvair evaporators?

Thanks to their significant throughput advantages, the Porvair Sciences evaporators are perfectly suited for laboratories looking to optimise their productivity in microplate sample preparation. The  evaporators offer several benefits including:

  • Faster speed than centrifugal evaporation
  • Significant increases in sample throughput
  • Advanced evaporator head technology
  • Innovative manifold design which simultaneously injects heated nitrogen directly into each individual well of the microplate

Designed with simplicity of installation, operation and maintenance in mind, the evaporators only require a connection to a gas supply or cylinder and mains electricity, and are safe to use thanks to the compactness of the CE marked units, which fit into all fume cupboards.

Your choice of needle heads

Steve Knight at Porvair Sciences shares: ‘When we were working to increase evaporation in both Minivap & Ultravap designs, we found that a spiral needle evaporated the liquid quicker than a straight needle due to the “vortex” that the spiral needle caused when close to the liquid.’

The vortex’ larger surface area (compared to a flat liquid) means there is a greater surface area available for evaporation, which helps the samples dry down quicker.

The spiral needle system, which is unique to Porvair evaporators, can only be used with vials and microplates that have sufficient width to take the spiral needle design. In practice this means square well plates and wide neck vials are ideal with the spiral needle head. However, the width of the round well plates is not enough to easily accept a spiral needle, meaning a straight needle head would have to be used on these.

Data collected from tests shows that spiral heads reduce the time taken with a straight head by approximately 12% off, so for the fastest dry-down times the spiral head would be best (provided that the plate or vial in use is suitable).
